The scorpion is also a member arachnid family together with the ticks, spiders and other related insects. They are usually three inches in length, with eight legs and with a pair of small claws similar to those of the crabs. The scorpion's stinger is located at the end of its tail. There are thousands of species of scorpions and about forty of them are in the South Western United States. Of these forty, only one kind can kill people, this one lives in Arizona, New Mexico.

The usual places where you can find scorpions are cool, damp areas like wood piles, junk piles or even basements. They are nocturnal creatures, usually asleep during the day and are awake at night and are said to be most active when it is raining.

How then will you know if you are stung by a scorpion? If you get stung by a scorpion, the area where you got stung will swell and may even change in color, depending on the specie of the scorpion that inflicted the sting on you. But it should be remembered that severe reactions from the venom of the scorpion can also be seen in other parts of the body so do not focus only on the site of the sting.

Since it is pretty difficult to determine or identify if the scorpion that bit you is venomous or not, you should not waste time and see a doctor immediately. Also as a first aid, immediately place an ice pack on the sting to keep the swelling from escalating.

Your doctor will probably give you medications to deal with the pain and also to control your body’s reaction to the venom. However, in instances where the patient is not recovering, as he or she should, the doctor may also prescribe antivenin to combat the venom.

How can you avoid getting stung by a scorpion? The best way is to avoid the places where they usually are located. Don’t play or work in junk pile areas or wood piles. If you really have to work on big piles of logs, be sure to wear gloves.
